Why do you work as an ecologist?

I worked as an ecological consultant after graduating from university, and enjoyed the mix of survey work in the field, balanced with office-based reporting and project management.

What are the main activities in your current role?

My current role is to co-run Ecology Jobs – a job-board managed by ecologists, for ecologists. We understand the specific needs, skills and requirements of both job-seekers and employers.

We enable employers to specifically market their vacancies to ecologists that have the matching skill-set and experience.

What is it like to work for your Ecology Jobs?

Working for Ecology Jobs is great! There’s two of us running the business day-to-day and we enjoy helping employers find new staff, whilst also appreciate the flexibility it offers us.

What careers advice would you give someone wishing to follow in your footsteps?

I’d recommend people get a good degree in ecology or related field, and work towards CIEEM membership as early as possible, whilst developing your protected species and habitat survey techniques.

Getting experience is also vital – identify consultancies near you and make contact to see if you can help during their busy field seasons. They’re often happy to have an extra pair of hands.
