Swansea is one of the most ecologically rich and diverse counties in the UK with over 50% of the county’s area being of significant biodiversity value. Its unique variety of habitats and species and wonderful range of parks, green spaces, nature reserves, beaches and landscapes needs to be maintained, enhanced and sustainably managed for the benefit of everyone now and into the future.

The postholder would be responsible for providing ecological advice in relation to planning applications, relevant appeals and public inquiries; implementation and review of relevant development plan policies; the co-ordination of biodiversity data and preparation of related plans and strategies; and the provision of specialist ecological advice and information to other council services and wider stakeholders to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and policy.

Candidates should have a relevant degree and preferably CIEEM membership. Sound ecological knowledge and survey skills (phase 1 habitats, and protected species survey experience and/or licenses) are required, as is a clear understanding of relevant legislation and policies. Excellent communication skills and an ability to deliver high quality and succinct technical reports are essential. The successful candidate will be diligent, passionate, professional and enthusiastic.

This is a temporary position initially for two years offered on a 0.5 basis (18.5 hours) with potential for additional hours and extended contract period dependent upon availability of funding.
