Greater Cambridge, which includes the South Cambridgeshire District and Cambridge City, is home to a world leading university, science research, IT and business parks and is one of the main growth areas in the country outside London, yet South Cambridgeshire still retains its rural feel amongst a changing setting.

This role will present you with exciting challenges and opportunities to influence the future of the area.  Moving towards a shared planning service between the two local authorities, there are many exciting schemes to get involved in including the redevelopment of plots, new settlements, urban extensions, all of which have implications for biodiversity conservation and provide exciting opportunities for innovative habitat creation.

We invite you to be part of a creative, multi-disciplinary Design Consultancy Unit that blends innovative approaches to the design of our environment whilst achieving high quality results on the ground. We need the most capable, committed and pragmatic ecologist to help in delivering on our vision

About You

As an Ecologist, you will play a key role in the pro-active planning, design and delivery of major developments, with special emphasis on the new town at Northstowe, new settlements at Waterbeach, Bourn Airfield, and major extensions around Cambridge. You will provide expert ecology advice through the development management process, attending design workshops with applicants and site visits where necessary. You should be able to present ideas to a range of audiences.

Whilst the development management role is key, you will also have the opportunity  to work  on community projects such as pond restoration, wild flower meadows and community orchards, as well as with colleagues in Housing and Land Drainage services to develop best practice.  Project management skills would be an asset.

As an Ecologist, you will have the ability to think strategically, to look for opportunities, to be a problem solver with a pragmatic approach. You will be a persuasive negotiator, with the ability to enlighten and enthuse others as to why it is necessary to conserve biodiversity, not just within the countryside, but also within the built environment.
