Job Summary

AECOM is looking to appoint a Senior / Principal Ecologist in Edinburgh to support our current project workload and the future growth of our business. The Senior / Principal Ecologist will assist and lead in the delivery of challenging technical projects throughout Scotland in terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments. In addition, they will work closely with ecologists and other specialists across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, assisting in the successful delivery of projects and supporting the development of these teams.

Job duties:

The Senior / Principal Ecologist will deliver ecological consultancy and advisory services to both internal and external clients to a high level of technical quality and to programme and budget. Current projects include high profile major transport and other infrastructure, conventional and renewable power development, international data centres, as well as other industrial, commercial and residential development projects. The Ecology team across Scotland and Ireland comprises 21 full time ecologists, based in Edinburgh, Belfast, Dublin, Galway and Cork. We form part of the wider UK Ecology Team comprising over 240 ecologists. Our ecologists work in terrestrial, freshwater and marine habitats. We provide clients with the full range of ecological services including specialist habitat and species surveys, impact assessment, advice on biodiversity mitigation, offsetting and enhancement, and management planning for biodiversity. AECOM is at the forefront of developing Biodiversity Net Gain and Natural Capital Accounting.

Minimum Requirements

  • Proactive and careful approach to Health and Safety, including first aid training certificate;
  • Technical and professional proficiency with a demonstrable history of winning and delivering ecology projects to a high quality standard, on time and within budget;
  • Previous work experience in the ecology sector within a professional consultancy, or relevant NGO or academic institute;
  • Strong project management skills, including the checking and approval of proposals and project outputs and budget management;
  • Experience of ecological impact assessment, design and/or construction management on major projects in the UK and/or Ireland;
  • Excellent knowledge of UK or Ireland, and EC wildlife legislation and policy, as well as Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA), and an understanding of the pl
