We are looking for a Senior Ecology Consultant to join our team in Nottingham. As a key member of our growing team, you will have the opportunity to contribute to some of the most exciting and innovative projects, providing high-quality ecological services across diverse sectors.
Our Waterman Ecology team is a CIEEM Registered Ecology Practice exemplifying our depth and breadth of experience and technical excellence.
Our office is situated in the heart of Nottingham, next to the National Justice Museum, offering excellent transport links and parking facilities. The team works on a range of prestigious projects, from arts and media facilities to student residential developments and more.
The Role
As a Senior Ecology Consultant, you will play a leading role in managing and delivering ecological assessments and services for a variety of projects, ensuring they meet environmental sustainability goals. You will conduct ecological surveys, lead projects, and mentor junior staff, all while collaborating with other regional teams across the UK.
Key Responsibilities:
• Lead and manage ecological surveys, providing high-quality technical reports, including PEA, EcIA, Biodiversity Net Gain, and BREEAM assessments.
• Advise clients on ecological matters, ensuring compliance with relevant environmental and planning regulations.
• Lead the delivery of projects in sectors including regeneration, property development, transport, and public infrastructure.
• Contribute to the EIA process and undertake Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA).
• Manage and mentor junior staff, promoting professional development within the team.
• Build and maintain client relationships, offering practical and commercially aware ecological advice.
• Collaborate with teams across regional offices, requiring occasional travel.
• Prepare fee proposals and reports, and oversee the technical review of reports from junior staff.
What We’re Looking For:
• A degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
• Experience in ecological consultancy or related sectors (further experience required for Principal roles).
• Full Membership of CIEEM and/or Chartered Ecologist status.
• Strong experience with ecological surveys and species handling, and the ability to lead fieldwork.
• Experience in delivering high-quality reports, including EcIA, PEA, and Biodiversity Net Gain assessments.
• An understanding of the EIA process and contributing to Environmental Statements.
• Ability to manage and develop junior staff and provide mentorship.
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to prepare fee proposals and technical reports.
• Solid understanding of conservation legislation and protected species licensing (ideally holding at least one survey/handling licence for a protected species).
• Experience in both linear infrastructure and property development projects.
