Main Purpose of the Job

As a result of our growing workload, we are looking for a Senior Ecologist to oversee and aid key project delivery. Duties will include a focus on the co-ordination of timely surveys, reporting and analysis for the bat-monitoring project as well as providing support and encouragement to junior staff involved. Additionally, you will be involved with general ecological consultancy activities on a variety of projects from road, water, rail or housing, throughout the UK but most likely in reasonable proximity to your home office.  The role would be based out of the Luton, Birmingham, Wakefield, Manchester or London offices and we anticipate a hybrid working arrangement with time split between home and the office.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

You will be responsible for a range of tasks incorporating the following elements, with a goal of progressing your career with us and enabling you to excel within a diverse environment:

  • Leading and co-ordinating the technical elements of the large-scale bat monitoring project as required whilst ensuring high levels of safety, quality and environmental responsibility
  • Be responsible for the technical quality of your own and the team’s survey, analysis and reporting in accordance with good practice guidance, ecological legislation and the Pell Frischmann internal quality systems
  • Project co-ordination with good commercial awareness and financial control, ensuring deliverables meet the client’s needs and are provided cost effectively and to an exemplary standard
  • Working in conjunction with project stakeholders including clients, and statutory consultees to achieve project aims whilst encouraging a high level of environmental protection;
  • Monitoring, planning and forecasting utilisation of the ecology team, including contributing to and preparing bids
  • Line management and mentoring of individuals within the team
  • Engage in business development, client and third-party liaison successfully leading to enhanced reputation, new and repeat work
  • Advocating the team’s services internally to our framework managers and technical leads
  • Assist with the promotion of the capabilities of the company to current and prospective clients.
  • Ensure compliance with internal management system procedures

Qualifications, Experience & Skills that are required to be successful in the role:

 

  Essential Preferred
Qualification
  • Degree in Ecology, Environmental Management or a related discipline
  • Membership (or eligibility to join) of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM)
 

  • A current CSCS card or equivalent (We can arrange)
Experience
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a UK consultancy for private and public-sector developers and operators, on a range of development / infrastructure projects
  • Experience of co-ordinating ecological aspects of large-scale infrastructure projects
  • Experience across a range of UK habitats and protected species, with a focus on bats
  • Management of large datasets

 

  • Line management experience
  • Proven record of developing pragmatic and cost-effective mitigation and supervising implementation on site
  • Providing ecological input to competitive tenders

 

Skills
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and organisational skills
  • Data management and analysis skills
  • Excellent knowledge of relevant UK wildlife legislation including conservation of protected species
  • Excellent knowledge of ecological survey methods and mitigation measures
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills
  • A collaborative nature, demonstrating strong relationships with other teams within the business
  • Be able to work well in a team and provide effective direction to all members of the team
  • Excellent commercial understanding of environmental consultancy procurement
  • Full UK driver’s licence
  • Good bat sound analysis
  • Good GIS skills
