Job Description

Do you have what it takes to transform society?

We are looking for a Senior Ecologist who is enthusiastic, curious, and ready for the next challenge. This role can be worked flexibly with a minimum of 3 days per week in the office/on-site and offers adjusted start and finish times.

We have an amazing opportunity to join our growing team in the UK while driving our strategies in Nature Recovery, biodiversity net gain, and Natural Capital. This is an exciting time to join Sweco—small in all the best ways but large enough to provide a diverse and exciting workload.

What Does the Role Involve?

As a Senior Ecologist, you’ll engage in both site surveys and office work while leading projects and delivering technical writing.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Managing small projects, including liaising with project managers and clients to deliver ecological requirements within multi-disciplinary tenders and projects.
  • Conducting desk studies and site-based preliminary ecological appraisals, including detailed habitat surveys.
  • Undertaking analysis, evaluation, interpretation, and presentation of ecological data.
  • Writing technical reports, including preliminary ecological appraisal reports, ecological impact assessments, and protected species license applications.
  • Performing the role of an Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) on construction projects.

In return, you’ll work on key projects and receive the support needed to gain licenses to work with different protected species. We also provide time in lieu for additional hours spent surveying during the season.

What You Need to Succeed:

  • Experience managing small ecology projects from inception through to construction.
  • Thorough understanding of UK survey methodology, legislation, guidelines, and best practices.
  • Experience conducting preliminary ecological appraisals, protected species surveys, and/or habitat surveys.
  • Report writing experience, including PEA reports, Ecological Impact Assessments, and protected species licenses.
  • A degree in Ecology, Environmental or Earth Sciences, or a related discipline.
  • Membership with CIEEM (desirable).
  • Protected species survey license (desirable).
  • ECoW experience.
  • A full, current driving license and willingness to travel to sites.
  • Adaptability and flexibility to occasionally work longer/unsociable hours and stay away from home when required.
