The Forth Rivers Trust has an exciting opportunity for a Seasonal Ecologist/Aquatic Scientist to join our team during the summer season from May until September, based in Edinburgh but covering all rivers of the Forth District.

The Trust is an environmental charity that works with a range of partners from the Scottish Government to local environmental groups. In accomplishing our objectives, we work with developers, infrastructure providers and others to ensure that works undertaken do not impact negatively on the health of our rivers and lochs. The Trust already has a strong reputation for providing consultancy services and is looking for a seasonal ecologist / scientist to assist with our consultancy workload.

The Role we are seeking a motivated individual with some ecological survey experience who is looking to progress a career in ecology or conservation who can work within the support structure of a dynamic team.

As a Seasonal Ecologist / Aquatic Scientist you will assist with a diverse range of ecological surveys and assessments across the Forth District.

Your duties may include:

  • Survey support and logistic planning
  • Ecological surveying and biological data collection (including electrofishing, salmonid, eel, otter & FWPM)
  • Providing ECoW services
  • Supporting the team working on a variety of projects
  • Other duties for attaining Trust objectives as required.

Desirable Skills & Experience include:

  • Educated to graduate level or higher in a relevant subject (we will consider candidates currently studying a relevant course)
  • Experience in ecology surveys or as a field scientist
  • Capable of managing a challenging workload
  • Full driving licence
  • GIS experience
  • CSCS card holder
  • CIEEM membership

On a personal level, we are looking for an enthusiastic individual with good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to fit into our friendly, lively and ambitious team.

You must be prepared to work outdoors, outside regular office hours or away from your home office when reasonably required.

We would be keen to offer a fixed term full-time role to the right candidate.  Deadlines for applications is 5pm on the 8th April. The interview and selection process will run w/c 12th April, with a start date on the 3rd of May.

Fixed term contract – 1st May – September (may be extended depending on funding)

Wage – £18,000 – £24,000 (depending on experience)
