Type: Full-time (37.5 hours per week), Temporary (1st April – 30th October 2026)
Salary: £25,000 (pro rata)
We are looking for an enthusiastic and reliable Seasonal Assistant Ecologist to join our busy team at Richard Green Ecology for the 2026 survey season. This role offers hands-on experience in bat ecology and surveying. In addition to fieldwork, you will gain valuable experience in the office, developing skills in data analysis, report preparation, and ecological consultancy.
You will provide essential support to our ecology team, helping surveys and operations run smoothly. This includes:
- Conducting evening bat emergence surveys
- Undertaking night-time bat walkover (transect) surveys
- Deploying, collecting, and maintaining static bat detectors
- Assisting with reptile surveys
- Providing support for other ecological fieldwork as required
- Analysing bat survey data from emergence, static detector, and transect surveys
- Writing up survey results and supporting report preparation
- Data uploading, survey administration, and responding to office calls
- Helping maintain survey equipment and assisting with kit management
- Taking responsibility for specific tasks, e.g., ladder checks, to build practical consultancy skills
Working hours will frequently fall outside normal office hours, with surveys typically running on weekdays with evening surveys Monday to Thursday. For the right candidate, there may be an opportunity for the role to become permanent.
Essential and Desirable Skills / Experience
- Full UK driving licence and own transport
- Ability to travel reliably to the office and survey sites
- Physically fit to work outdoors in the dark and in variable weather
- Positive work ethic and willingness to work unsociable hours
- Interest in ecology or wildlife conservation
- Ability to work effectively in a team and communicate clearly
- Good time management and reliability
- Knowledge of bats or previous wildlife survey experience
- Strong observational, listening, and recording skills
