The British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) is a UK charity dedicated to protecting and conserving native hedgehogs. Through research, advocacy, and education, BHPS works to reverse population declines and safeguard the future of this iconic species.
They are now seeking a Research Manager to lead and develop their research grants programme and help drive evidence-based conservation action.
About the role
This is a varied and influential role within a small, collaborative team. You will combine strategic thinking with hands-on delivery – shaping research priorities while managing grants, budgets, reporting, and impact evaluation.
You will:
- Manage and administer BHPS’s research grants programme
- Oversee commissioned research from design through to dissemination
- Build relationships with researchers, partners, and funders
- Help identify priority research areas and evidence gaps
- Communicate research findings to a wide range of audiences
- Contribute to the development of BHPS’s wider conservation work
What they’re looking for
This role would suit someone with a strong grounding in conservation research and the ability to work across both strategic and operational tasks.
Essential:
- Degree in a conservation-related field
- Knowledge of academic publishing and research practices
- Understanding of UK wildlife policy and conservation approaches
- Strong organisational, analytical, and communication skills
- Experience managing projects, data, or grant processes
Desirable:
- Postgraduate qualification (MSc or PhD)
- Experience in mammal ecology, population biology, or applied conservation
- Knowledge of research funding systems or charity governance
A passion for British wildlife and a collaborative, solutions-focused mindset are key.
Why join BHPS?
- Play a central role in shaping conservation research for hedgehogs
- Work in a small, supportive team where your contribution has real impact
- Flexible, part-time role with mostly remote working
- Opportunity to influence national conservation priorities
