Currently we are seeking a Principal/Senior Ecologist to join us in Falmer, or any of our offices in the South. Increasing workloads from existing clients and our success in winning new Water Company frameworks has resulted in the need to further grow our ecology team.

As part of Stantec’s integrated team of environmental professionals, you will be expected to provide advice relating to the ecological and biodiversity aspects of a project to both to our internal and external clients. Your day to day activities will include undertaking field surveys, site supervision, writing reports and mitigation strategies and managing projects to budgets and deadlines. You will lead on small and large-scale project work, while helping to further develop our in-house ecological capability of our national team; You will provide field and office ecological support on a wide range of projects including fluvial and coastal flood risk management, water utility, rail, renewable/ energy projects and other large-scale infrastructure, manage, review and write all stages of Ecological Impact Assessments and HRA; while providing ecological input into other consents such as Water Framework Directive assessments;

You will also be responsible for ecological subcontractors, approving scope of works, undertaking technical reviews lead a team of field ecologists and provide mentorship to junior staff. Good communication skills are essential as you will be liaising with clients, project managers statutory bodies and other project stakeholders including contactors.

About You

You will have a degree in environmental science or a similar ecological discipline and be working towards Chartered Status. Ideally, you will have membership of CIEEM & IFM RSB.

You will also have the following:-

  • Detailed knowledge of the practical application of UK wildlife legislation, planning policy and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), including the Water Framework Directive;
  • Experience of Ecological Impact Assessment and writing Environmental Statement chapters;
  • Experience across a range of UK habitats and protected species and hold at least one protected species licence, ideally bat, great crested newt or dormouse or have extensive ornithological experience;
  • Experience in Habitats Regulations Assessment Stages 1 and 2;
  • Experience in conducting ecological and protected species surveys is vital to this position as well as producing species reports and assessments in accordance with the CIEEM guidelines for ecological impact assessment in the UK and Ireland;
