About the Position
We are currently seeking a Principal Ecologist in the midlands or southern England for a newly established Environmental Planning (EP) consulting operation based in the United Kingdom.
As the Principal Ecologist you will play a pivotal role within our expanding EP Team. Your primary responsibilities will be to manage a diverse array of Ecology projects (including but not limited to managing projects and project teams, proposal and report preparation, providing advice, consultancy and design to internal and external clients on ecological aspects of projects, managing client accounts and developing client relationships, and assisting with marketing and business development activities). Your influence will extend to team management and the delivery of services to national and international clients across a wide range of sectors, including but not limited to property, technology, retail, chemical, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, food and beverage, automation, healthcare, and financial industries.

- Ability to design, manage, and undertake a wide range of ecological surveys and associated mitigation.
- Ability to both prepare and technically review ecology fee proposals and reports.
- Skills to train and develop junior colleagues.
- Marketing and business development skills.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships at all levels within the business, with clients and their teams, subcontractors and other third parties (regulators, statutory consultees, etc.).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant subject (2:1 or higher).
- At least six years’ experience as a professional ecological consultant.
- Associate membership of CIEEM (or higher) and a willingness to work towards Full membership.
- Natural England minimum Level 1 bat survey licence and ideally great crested newt licence (Level 1 or above).
- Full clean driving licence.
- Good ecological field skills covering a range of protected species and habitats, including UK Habs.
- A sound understanding of the legislative and planning policy framework as it relates to ecology and nature conservation.
- The ability to write concise, high quality, technical reports in line with CIEEM guidelines.
- Experience in Habitats Regulations Assessment and Biodiversity Net Gain.
- Good working knowledge of QGIS advantageous.
- Experience of writing fee proposals, project management and client liaison.
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
- Good commercial awareness.
Additional Desirable Qualifications
- Natural England protected species licences for other species, or to have held them
- BSBI FISC (Level 3 or above) ideally.
- CSCS Card.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Our newly established consulting operation in the United Kingdom will be supported by our sister company, Antea Group USA.
This position will be a hybrid role, being primarily homebased with periodic travel required to Antea Group offices or client premises in the United Kingdom. Some project locations will require overnight travel (up to 25%). The successful candidate must have the right to work in the UK.
