Overview

We are seeking 3 Advisers to cover the work areas set out below. Depending on the capabilities of candidates, this work could be distributed such that each Adviser takes on more work in one of the areas or all Advisers take on aspects of all work areas. In all cases, these will be varied roles requiring a flexible, positive attitude. Development opportunities will also be varied, allowing the Advisers to build their capabilities in all of the work areas.

Facilitate flexible working across the team and organisation as requested, by developing relevant knowledge and skills and applying them as appropriate (including assisting with Wildlife Management casework and GI/data management work as required).
Assist with enquiries (telephone, email and written requests) for advice and information on the license application process.
Work with the Group Coordinator and Team Leader in the development of the Support Advisers and other colleagues as required (including through coaching, mentoring and training).
Encourage a culture of continuous improvement by reviewing existing working practices and promoting new working practices.

Communications and Administration

Support or lead on security, customer service, and communications work for the team as required.
Oversee the monitoring and handling of incoming communications, and the work of relevant team members, approving or developing responses or escalating as appropriate. Use good judgement to identify emerging problems in this sensitive area of work, liaising with other team members as appropriate.
Manage communications-based cases such as Freedom of Information requests to meet deadlines and customer service standards.
Prepare or support preparation of complex literature and correspondence (including guidance, procedures, and responses to complaints and Freedom of Information requests), demonstrating accuracy, consistency and attention to detail.
Review previous correspondence and other team documentation to create and maintain reference databases and clear filing structures with version control.
Support production of correspondence and documentation by the team: undertaking quality assurance checks as appropriate; ensuring the technical advice of colleagues is appropriately applied; ensuring accuracy, consistency and attention to detail; implementing consistent structure, style and formatting.

Data Management and GIS

Accurate and efficient digitising and data analysis (including spatial data in GIS) to support the team’s assessment of licences applications and monitoring of licences.
Develop and deliver training for team members in relation to basic or task-specific use of GIS.

Wildlife Licensing

Contribute to the processing of wildlife licence applications including document checking and data collation.
Support the Lead Advisers in their delivery of wildlife licensing and licence monitoring, including processing, checking and collating forms, reports and data.
Arrange field visits for Lead Advisers, and undertake field visits subject to satisfactory completion of training.
Assist with enquiries (telephone, email and written requests) for technical wildlife advice.

Additional information

The role may require occasional travel to conduct or participate in visits, meetings and training. This may sometimes require overnight stays.
A current full driving licence is desirable for the role
The very public profile of this sensitive work area requires a high level of professionalism, courtesy, tact and diplomacy.
Some out of hours work may be requested to implement health and safety protocols for the team but agreement to undertaking this work is optional.
Flexible working patterns will generally be accommodated where possible but please note: the post-holder will be expected to work from the Bristol office; suggested minimum working hours for this role are 18 hrs/week over 3 consecutive days due to the workload and nature of the role; working hours will need to be agreed to ensure that cover is maintained for the helpline and enquiries work.

Technical/specialist knowledge/qualifications

Description

Essential
• A degree in a science or technology subject at level 2:2 or higher, or evidence of equivalent relevant experience (including report writing with attention to detail, IT and communication skills, literature reviews, and workload management).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with excellent attention to detail.
• Excellent IT skills including an excellent understanding of Microsoft Office applications and their capabilities (particularly Excel).
Desirable
• Advanced IT skills such as use of macros/VBA, programming/scripting, GIS, development of relational databases.
• Knowledge of the Government’s bTB Policy and relevant wildlife legislation (e.g. Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981, Protection of Badgers Act 1992), and knowledge of wildlife management techniques and agriculture.
