Overview

The Coastal and Marine advisers work within the Sussex and Kent area team to provide advice and consultations with users of the sea and coastal habitats, specific to the legislation in place or with regard to future designations. The area is partly through a very ambition Marine designation programme to establish a clear network of protected areas around out coast. After designation we work with statutory agencies and partners to manage the special nature of these protected areas whether marine or coastal.
Job description
Working on our Marine and Coastal programme delivery including:

Designation of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)
Provision of formal MPA Conservation Advice
Support to Regulators (eg MMO, IFCAs and LAs) on management of activities related to MPAs eg fisheries and non-licensed activities
Provision of advice to planning authorities, partners and users of coastal processes and development
Support our marine and coastal casework and respond as required to specific consultations. Support Lead/Senior Advisers in higher risk casework. This would include chargeable services.
Respond to enquiries and queries and actively partake in engagement opportunities as directed by the Area Team.
Contribute to other Area Team outcomes as agreed with your Team Leader
Licences
Role specific license requirements:

A full Driving Licence is desirable for the role but not essential

• Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the different types of Marine Protected Areas (MPA), how they are created and their management in order to set clear and practical aims for sea users and regulators and/or to inform decisions / actions relating to your role
• Provide evidence based advice and expertise using your knowledge of an area of marine and coastal biology, ecology and processes or other area of technical expertise that relates to your role
• Provide evidence-based advice and expertise using your knowledge of marine and coastal policy and legislation e.g. Habitats Regulations; Marine & Coastal Access Act, etc.

Technical/specialist knowledge/qualifications

• Knowledge of marine and coastal activities relevant to the area and a clear understanding of their potential impacts on marine and coastal processes, habitats and species
• Knowledge of key data sources and ability to interpret them
• Knowledge of marine and coastal habitats and species
• Competent and experienced in use of information technology including Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access and ideally geographical information systems (ESRI Arc GIS).
• Knowledge of current marine and coastal legislative drivers and legislation
• Knowledge of marine survey and monitoring and the use of evidence, data analysis and data standards.
