Overview
Job Title: Head of Ornithology
Term: Full-time, fixed term 5 years (with the possibility of extension)
Probationary Period: 1 year
Background
Fair Isle is a small (approx. 5 x 3 km), remote island approximately halfway between Orkney and mainland Shetland in northern Scotland. Owned by the National Trust for Scotland (NTS), it is famous for its spectacular coastal scenery, internationally important seabird populations, diverse marine and archaeological heritage, and its thriving local arts and crafts community. Fair Isle is also renowned for its history of recording rare vagrant birds in the UK.
The island hosts a vibrant local community of about 55 residents and offers amenities such as a primary school, a shop, and a resident nurse. It is accessible by regular transport links (six days per week in summer) to mainland Shetland, by sea and air.
Fair Isle Bird Observatory (FIBO) is managed by the Fair Isle Bird Observatory Trust, an independent, non-profit charity. Established in 1948 by the eminent Scottish ornithologist George Waterston, FIBO’s aims include conducting ornithological research, providing accommodation and education for visitors, and supporting the island’s economy.
The Observatory has been completely rebuilt and is set to re-open in early 2025. It will provide full board, en-suite accommodation for up to 35 visitors, primarily between April and early November, in addition to housing seasonal staff and visiting researchers.
Core staff: Head of Ornithology and a Hospitality Manager.
Seasonal staff: 1–2 ornithological staff, a ranger (visitor interpretation), and 4–5 hospitality staff (cook, assistant cook, domestic assistants).
The Head of Ornithology and Hospitality Manager are jointly responsible for the day-to-day operations, including ornithological work, accommodation, and visitor services. These posts require significant initiative, dedication, and autonomy and offer the unique opportunity to live and work in an environment of exceptional natural beauty.
We are now accepting applications for the Head of Ornithology and Hospitality Manager roles, aiming to hire personnel for the 2025 season onwards. Applications are welcome from both individual applicants and couples/partnerships.
