Our Innovative Sustainable Solutions business provides a focus for advising our clients on sustainability issues including renewable energy, low carbon economies, impacts of climate change and waste and resource management. Our environmental capabilities comprise of in excess of 1000 staff based predominantly in the UK, but with reach into the Middle East and in India.
The ecology team is currently over a hundred strong which means technical as well as career mentoring to ensure your continued professional development. We currently have an opportunity for a Graduate Ecologist to be based within our team in Manchester. The successful person will become part of a respected and ambitious company with excellent career prospects and international opportunities.
Primary Job Responsibilities
  • Supporting the national team of ecologists working on a variety of projects.
  • Survey support and logistic planning.
  • Ecological surveying and biological data collection.
  • Producing quality assured ecology deliverables.
  • Originating survey reports.
  • Identifying health and safety hazards of specific projects, demonstrating a commitment to your own health and safety and to those around you.
  • Supporting the engineering and technical teams in project delivery
Qualifications

 

Essential:

  • An honours degree in ecology or a closely related subject;
  • Graduate or Associate membership of the CIEEM;
  • Good communication skills and the ability to write clear, concise reports;
  • Competency in the survey of one or more of the following key protected species; bats, dormouse, great crested newts, badgers, reptiles, water voles and / or otters;
  • Experience of providing assistance during the preparation of EPSM licences for one or more of the following: bats, dormice and / or great crested newts.
  • Knowledge of ecology, survey techniques and legislation;
  • Up to date knowledge of, and familiarity with new technologies and best practice guidelines;
  • Up to date knowledge of EU and UK legislation and policy;
  • Good communication skills to enable effective liaison with colleagues;
  • Excellent team working skills; and,
  • A full and clean driving licence.
  • A flexible approach to working hours to accommodate seasonality and survey time constraints. (Jacobs has a strong record regarding duty of care to employees and as such you will not be expected to work unreasonably long days and we do not permit lone working).
Desired:
  • An MSc in ecology or a closely related subject;
  • The ability to design, plan and lead on a variety of ecological surveys (including Extended Phase 1 Habitat surveys and protected species surveys);
  • At least one protected species survey licence (in particular bats);
  • Experience of Ecological Clerk of Works duties; and,
  • Capability in GIS would be advantageous.
