Overview

Western Ecology are looking for a Field Ecologist to support our busy consultancy.

Based in Cornwall, we have been established for almost 10 years now, and keep on growing with projects across the England, Scotland and Wales. We have eight full time ecology staff and two admin, along with a number of part-time staff we can call on for various projects.

We are now looking to add to our team by bringing in a new member of staff. Help to strengthen this area of the business.

We envisage someone who is independent and self-motivated, as there will be frequent travel across the UK, with nights away working in isolation from our base near the Cornwall/Devon border. This would not suit everyone, but if you are a bit of a wanderer and like to travel the UK, enjoy your own company, love the practical side of being a consultant ecologist, can organise and plan your work effectively, and have a sense of adventure, this might be perfect for you.

Ideally you would live in Devon, Cornwall or Somerset. We encourage hybrid working, although we would like to see you in the office at least 2 or 3 times a month.

You will work with a diverse range of projects across the UK, mainly on renewable energy schemes and infrastructure.

You will be an ecologist with at least 2 years’ experience and a proven record within ecological consultancy, including experience and understanding of:

  • current relevant policy and legislation and its real world application;
  • preliminary ecological appraisals;
  • bat activity transects;
  • wintering and breeding bird surveys.

As your experience grows with us, we would envisage you taking a more senior position in the business, and we will work with you to help you develop your skills and experience.

The following are required:

  • Must be willing to work unsocial hours associated with ecology survey work;
  • Be able to organize work away from home, travelling from site to site;
  • Full clean driving licence.

You will need the following skills:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team;
  • Demonstrable communication skills, building relationships and trust with colleagues and clients;
  • Very strong organisational skills;
  • An ability to solve complex logistical problems in a logical and realistic way;
  • Inquisitiveness and willingness to learn;
  • Attention to detail with good written and verbal skills.

We offer:

  • Working in a friendly and supportive team;
  • Flexible hours- we encourage staff to manage their own time and follow their interests outside work;
  • The opportunity to work on a variety of interesting and challenging projects;
  • Good rates of pay;
  • Company pension scheme;
  • Payment of professional memberships and CPD;
  • Statutory annual leave;
  • All necessary equipment including laptop, mobile phone, survey tablet, office furniture and printer;
  • Company vehicle.
