Overview

This is an exciting opportunity for someone to join an experienced environmental monitoring team and to make a substantial contribution to the natural environment here in the North East.
We are looking for an enthusiastic ecologist with good all round marine skills, who is keen to gain further experience in planning and delivering the marine monitoring programme. The programme includes, fish, sea grass, saltmarsh and marine algae surveys. You’ll have excellent data management skills understanding the need for good data quality. Familiarity of simple GIS techniques is advantageous but not essential along with good communication skills.
The team
The team consists of Environment monitoring Officers and Assistants responsible for delivering monitoring programmes and data collection in the field. The information resulting from these activities is used by the Analysis and Reporting team to determine the quality of the aquatic environment, from which the Environment Agency can plan and deliver water quality and habitat improvement plans where the need is most.
Experience/skills required
Ideally you’ll be qualified to degree level ( or equivalent ) and a number of years experience gained in a marine environment. Competent in all ecology monitoring techniques including , water chemistry, flora, fauna, invert and fisheries survey techniques is desirable. Experience of some or all of these methods and techniques needed to carry out these inter tidal surveys effectively and safely is important, but support will be given.

The role will primarily involve the planning, operating out of a base at Tyneside House, Newcastle upon Tyne.

You’ll be lone working during these tasks, working outside in all weathers and some tasks can be physically demanding. All personal protective equipment will be supplied.

As the role requires extensive travel to field sites in the Northumberland Durham and Tees Area you’ll require a full UK driving licence. At times this work may include weekend work and overnight stays.

Grade rate: £21,991 pro rata
