Overview

ENQUIRIES FOR THIS POST ARE NOW BEING SOUGHT.

If you are a recent graduate or soon-to-graduate student and are interested in this position for 2025 (or 2026), please get in touch. The role can be part-tailored to meet the interests of the successful candidate.

The internship will run for 12 months from January/February 2025 and will give the successful applicant the opportunity to gain valuable experience in ecological surveying, running community engagement and citizen science events, assisting in the development of a youth team, and more.

We welcome applicants who have received, within the last 5 years, a degree or a vocational diploma in a relevant subject (e.g., ecology, biology, environmental science, conservation, land and wildlife management, etc.). Experience in surveying and a good knowledge of native wildflowers, birds, butterflies, and other pollinators—or a willingness to learn—is essential.

As our intern, your main area of focus will be on the ecology, wildlife monitoring, and management of our community woodland and calcareous grassland, Harmony Woods. However, you will also have the opportunity to gain experience in other aspects of the charity’s work, with the potential to steer your internship toward areas that interest you (e.g., fundraising, PR & publicity, education, event planning, and more).

A love of nature is essential, as is a keen desire to share your environmental passion and knowledge with the local community.

Responsibilities:

  • Run our “Nature in Harmony” programme, which includes:
    • Planning and leading biodiversity surveys (wildflowers, birds, pollinators, butterflies) from April to September and writing a report on the findings.
    • Recording the annual growth of elm trees on site.
    • Planning and leading community connections to nature and citizen science events over the spring and summer.
    • Co-developing our youth programme.
    • Leading your own mini-project.

You’ll be supported by our Trustees and volunteer Management Team, composed of experienced professionals from a wide range of backgrounds, and will collaborate with our paid officers—so teamwork and good communication will be vital in this role.

You will help plan and deliver engaging nature- and arts-based community projects, working both at a desk and outdoors. Be prepared to get involved!

Position Details:

  • Part-time role, minimum two days a week; some evenings and weekends required.
  • This is not a salaried role, but a stipend of £3,000 per year is provided, paid in quarterly installments. Opportunities may arise to write new projects that include dedicated funding for you, the applicant, as a project officer.

Please email our current intern at katie.sell@andovertrees.org.uk if you would like to find out more.
