We have an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and self-motivated ecologist to join our small and friendly consultancy. This position would suit someone who has some consultancy experience and who is looking for a new challenge with the ability to work remotely.

Ecology and Habitat Management Ltd is an independent consultancy, specialising in airfield habitat management and ecology services. We support a vast network of clients across the UK and Europe providing high quality, bespoke services ranging from bird risk management to protected species surveys and mitigation.

Key Activities

You will be responsible for a number ecological consultancy and biodiversity management activities. This will be a varied and dynamic role which will suit a self-motivated person with a passion for ecology. The position has the potential to be shaped to suit the successful applicant and you will be exposed to a wide range of ecological projects and clients.

This position will be remote based and suit someone who is used to working independently away from an office environment. The majority of the work is located in London and the South East of England; there is some flexibility of where the ecologist can be based. The successful applicant will be someone who can plan and deliver their own work load. This is offered as a fixed term contract with the possibility to extend or become permanent.

This is an excellent opportunity for the right applicant to grow and gain consultancy experience. The work will be varied but the key activities are likely to include;

  • Carry out habitat (extended Phase 1) and protected species surveys (badger, bat, dormouse, GCN, otter, reptile, water vole).
  • Undertake background research and write ecological reports to a high standard.
  • Collect, manage and analyse field survey data.
  • Liaise with clients.
  • Help manage seasonal ecologists and sub-consultants.
  • Help develop and implement site Biodiversity Action Plans
  • Help to develop sit Biodiversity management plans
  • Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments

Skills/ Requirements

We are looking for someone with a passion for ecology and nature conservation, with experience of working as part of a small team with good communication skills. Candidates will be required to have a relevant degree or suitable experience and have or be eligible for Associate CIEEM membership.

They will have a detailed level of knowledge of ecological consultancy work and its application. The role will include a combination of field work, report writing and client liaison. This role will require someone who is able to manage their own schedule and work to a high standard unsupervised. There is an opportunity for the right candidate to grow within the company and this is an excellent opportunity to gain knowledge in ecological consultancy.

Essential Skills/ Qualifications

  • BSc or equivalent qualification in Ecology, Biological Sciences or similar
  • Excellent report writing skills
  • Able and willing to work away from home overnight
  • Experience in Phase I/ PEA surveys and reports
  • Full Driving Licence and access to private vehicle able to use for work
  • Enthusiastic and positive personality with the ability to engage well with clients and colleagues alike
  • Ability to work under own supervision
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weathers and in rough terrain
  • Understanding of British fauna and flora and survey techniques
  • A passion for ecology and wildlife conservation
  • A broad understanding of UK wildlife legislation and planning policy.

Desirable

  • At least 1 years’ post-graduate experience in a similar or complimentary environment is preferred
  • A Protected Species licence is preferred
  • Membership of CIEEM (or eligibility to apply)
  • Familiarity in use of GIS software
  • Knowledge of Biodiversity Net gain assessments and calculations

Terms and Conditions

Salary: £25,000 pa

Contract: Fixed Term 12 months. Part time possible.

Hours of work: Your normal hours of work are 40 hours each week excluding a daily lunch break.

Place of work: Home based with site work across the country. Predominately in the South East of England.

Holidays: 20 days pa plus English Bank Holidays.

Medical: You must be considered medically fit to undertake this position and will be required to complete a medical assessment form.

Training: Full training will be given to the successful applicants to ensure they are capable of carrying out the required duties.
