Your Role

As a Consultant Ecologist, you’ll play an integral role in our consultancy team, supporting and leading projects while working closely with colleagues and subcontractors.

Key responsibilities:

  • Conduct ecological surveys: UKHab, Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), and protected species (e.g., bats, GCNs, reptiles, water voles)

  • Manage small to medium-scale projects: quoting, surveying, reporting, invoicing

  • Prepare reports: Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs)

  • Support and supervise junior staff

  • Liaise with clients, planning authorities, and statutory bodies

  • Design and implement mitigation measures with senior support

  • Maintain and manage ecological equipment

  • Produce RAMS (risk assessments and method statements)

  • Prepare protected species licence applications (with guidance)

  • Conduct Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) duties

  • Submit biological records to Local Records Centres


Essential Skills & Experience

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in ecological consultancy

  • Excellent report writing (PEAs and EcIAs)

  • Degree in ecology, environmental science, or related field

  • At least one protected species survey licence (e.g., bats, GCNs)

  • Competence in surveying and mitigation for at least two protected species

  • Knowledge of UK/EU environmental legislation

  • Strong botanical skills

  • Proficiency in UKHab surveys and BNG assessments

  • Effective project management and client engagement

  • Positive, enthusiastic, and professional attitude

  • Full UK driving licence and access to transport


Desirable Skills & Experience

  • FISC Level 3 or above (or willingness to achieve it)

  • GIS mapping and data analysis

  • Experience with ECoW supervision

  • Experience preparing protected species licence applications

  • Associate membership of CIEEM (or intention to obtain)

  • A strong professional network within ecology/conservation
