Overview

We are seeking to employ an assistant ecologist on a temporary contract or ad hoc project by project basis, to work within a small team in our Midlands office. Work will centre on conducting bat, reptile and great crested newt surveys and assistance with other areas of our work.

The Ecology Consultancy has been operating since 1999 and our regional office, just outside of Lewes in Sussex, has been trading since 2007. We are the largest dedicated ecology company in the county and have forged close relationships with the private and public sector. Our workload includes survey, assessment and mitigation work on a wide variety of projects comprising; small to large scale housing developments, road, rail and port infrastructure, historic building renovation and district wide habitat and green infrastructure appraisals. Our clients include firms of architects, planning consultants, engineering companies, statutory agencies and local authorities.

The post will be based in our Staffordshire office with the main areas of work being across the Midlands. The nature of our work means that there will be a requirement to undertake such travel as is necessary to successfully carry out contracts and for night-time working and unsociable hours where needed for surveys.

Person specification

The Assistant Ecologist will need the following:

Essential

  • An appropriate (or equivalent) degree qualification;
  • Experience of protected species/field surveys such as reptile, great crested newt and bat surveys
  • Motivated and good organisational skills
  • Be willing to work during evenings and at weekends;
  • Have a full clean UK driving licence;
  • Good data management/Quality Assurance
  • Good report writing skills.

Desirable

  • A valid CSCS card;
  • A great crested newt survey licence would be an advantage;
  • Experience with other species groups and/or habitats would be an advantage;
  • Experience of Ecological Clerk of Works;
  • CIEEM Graduate or Associate Membership.
