The team

The ADAS entomology team provide research and consultancy expertise to improve management of arable, horticultural and tree pests.  The team conducts innovative research, provides specialist consultancy and develops sustainable and practical Integrated Pest Management (IPM) solutions.  Research areas include development and optimisation of biological and cultural control methods within IPM programmes, pesticide and biopesticide efficacy trials, pest biology and ecology, risk assessment, resistance management, pest monitoring and forecasting systems, and technology transfer.

The role

The diverse range of approaches, responsibilities and clients mean that no two days will be the same.  The roles are a mix of office and outdoor work.  This will include management of field and glasshouse/polytunnel experiments at ADAS and commercial sites mainly in Eastern England.  Travel and short stays away from home will be required.  Most of the ‘hands-on’ experimentation is conducted by technical teams, with which you will work closely.  With appropriate experience and training, you will be responsible for writing and agreeing protocols, monitoring progress, analysing and reporting results, interpretation of results into practical messages and communication of those messages – through reports, press articles, on conference platforms, in client meetings, through ADAS initiatives and industry events, and by peer-review papers.

The outcome of your work will be real improvements to the efficiency and sustainability of crop production.

What you will be doing

Manage projects throughout the complete project cycle (including helping to win the work, planning the resources and ensuring timely and profitable delivery).
Integrate cultural control methods, biological control agents, biopesticides and minimal use of conventional pesticides in order to achieve high quality products within horticultural crops (protected and field) for clients.
Deliver practical research and consultancy on the sustainable control of the major invertebrate pests of horticultural crops.  Identifying opportunities for extending IPM approaches developed in horticulture across into arable crops.
Developing sound and effective working relationships with project funders and collaborators in order to grow the business.
Raise the profile of the crop protection sector by presenting at science and industry conferences and by writing peer reviewed papers.

Successful candidates will

Apply knowledge of biology underpinned by scientific understanding to manage research experiments that meet the client’s requirements and produce robust and credible scientific data and information.
Demonstrate knowledge of crop production and entomology/pest management in order to meet client needs.
Ensure that scientific research projects are planned, managed and lead to achieve stated objectives within the agreed timescale and budget.
Demonstrate strong ability for analysing and organising large, complex datasets to meet the requirements of the project.
Write client reports, scientific papers and bids that are clear, logical and persuasive, meeting the needs of clients and achieving the objective of the communication for ADAS.
Communicate effectively with a range of audiences to transfer the knowledge gained.  This will include speaking at grower meetings, presenting to conferences of scientists and/or practitioners and writing technical articles and leaflets.
Recognise and understand the team’s aims and objectives and participate fully in achieving these with team members by adapting your own input to suit the needs of the team.
