Job Description

You will work within a large team of ecologists and other environmental specialists, on a wide range of projects across multiple sectors (power, transport, maritime). You will support the team leader in the management and mentoring of junior and seasonal staff, with the opportunity to gain experience with project management and business development. This role will suit an outgoing individual who wants to be part of a growing ecology business in London, helping to support delivery of a wide range of diverse projects, from small to large scale, in a fast moving, client focussed commercial environment.

You will be based in either the Croydon or London office. You will be expected to mentor junior members of staff, helping them develop their field skills, lead ecological assessments and protected species surveys, and have the ability to manage time and budgets on your own projects, with minimal supervision from senior staff. There may also be a need for general ecological support to a range of projects within an environmental team, working closely with other disciplines to ensure ecological objectives for projects are delivered successfully, within budget and to programme.

Candidate Specification

Your experience should be a good mixture of the following:

  • Degree in ecology/ biology or directly related subject
  • You must hold at least one protected species licence i.e. GCN, bat, dormouse
  • Have the ability to liaise with regulatory bodies, for example when inputting into protected species licencing
  • Experience undertaking protected species surveys and assessments associated with major infrastructure schemes.
  • Experience working in the consultancy environment, taking into account project budgets and sometimes challenging project programmes
  • Strong report writing skills, attention to detail and ability to write concise reports
  • Experience in undertaking and reporting on ecological studies including Preliminary Ecological Appraisal, EcIA, EIA, and BREEAM
  • Experience in preparation and writing ecology chapters for environmental impact assessments, ensuring that legislative guidelines are met
  • Knowledge of wildlife legislation, including planning process and EIA assessments
  • Experience of on site ecological supervision, and management of sub-contractors would be beneficial
  • Ability to work independently, take the initiative, make robust, defensible decisions and work to tight deadlines to meet client needs
  • Proficient in Word and Excel
  • Full, clean driving licence and willingness to travel if required

Job Profile

Are you an ecologist who feels you have the potential to start to progress to a more senior level, but can’t see that opportunity with your current organisation? We have a position that offers a career minded ecologist the opportunity to develop their management and people skills, whilst still retaining technical involvement, with the excellent mentoring and career support provided by Mott MacDonald allowing an individual in this role to move to senior ecologist level. This position would be perfect for an ecologist who is looking to become more involved in project and people management, in addition to office based technical work, while still retaining a strong element of field based survey work in their role.

Our environment team provides a wide range of specialist environmental support to internal and external clients and has an increasing workload within both the transportation and development sectors. The team is currently looking to expand to meet its current and future commitments within the transportation, water and power sectors. Due to this continuous growth we now have a need for an enthusiastic and experienced ecologist to join our team in London.
