About the role

This is an excellent opportunity for high-calibre, motivated and commercially-minded scientists to join our growing fisheries team.

APEM is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic individual with a proven track record in a consultancy environment at Principal, Technical Specialist or Senior Scientist Level in a relevant field.  You will have specialist knowledge and skills to enable you to assist with the management and technical consultancy of projects in the areas of freshwater, estuarine or marine fisheries. A strong background in fisheries ecology and the application of this knowledge to environmental assessments and studies is required.

APEM’s fisheries team is currently undertaking projects on the impacts of water abstraction, environmental monitoring and assessment of water company Drought Plans, WFD/heavily modified water body assessments, Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), fish entrainment/impingement assessments, hydropower assessment and fish passage. An understanding of UK fisheries legislation and its application to monitoring and environmental assessments will be an advantage.

Our benefits package includes 25 days holiday (increasing to a maximum of 30 days in line with length of service), pension, company profit share, private medical insurance, health cash plan, group income protection, death in service insurance, childcare vouchers, cycle to work scheme, company maternity and paternity pay.

About you

You will be self-motivated and able to work independently as well as within project teams drawn from our regional offices. For the Principal and Technical Specialist roles you will also have the drive and enthusiasm to expand the current fisheries portfolio within APEM and to represent it externally.  Thus, the ability to communicate effectively with clients in all sectors and a sense of pride in, and responsibility for your work are paramount for these positions.

Depending on the grade applied for, we would anticipate candidates will have a minimum of an MSc or PhD in a relevant discipline or the equivalent professional experience, along with relevant consultancy experience. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, as well as the ability to work to tight deadlines.

Whether you are an applicant with academic, regulatory, consultancy or third sector experience you will need to demonstrate your ability to apply your skills in a commercial consultancy context through experience of managing projects and dealing with people effectively and professionally.

You will be primarily office-based, although site visits, client meetings and fieldwork are likely to be required, which may include overnight stays; therefore, a full driving licence and personal flexibility is essential.
