Are you a dedicated worker and team player with experience in ecological consultancy? If
this is you we have a great opportunity for a Senior Ecologist to join our team in
Chelmsford.
Working on a national basis MLM are one of the largest regionally based consultancy
engineering and environmental services practices. We are committed to continuous

projects.
Principal duties include:
Undertaking the design and management of ecological surveys from inception
through to completion.
Liaising with clients, professional advisors, contractors, insurance companies and
general public.
Undertaking preliminary ecological appraisals, surveys for legally protected species
and ecological impact assessment and mitigation plan writing reports.
Acting as job manager for QA purposes.
Supervising and training current ecological employees to assist with protected species
surveys as appropriate.
Drafting site instructions, certificates and correspondence.
Suitably Qualified Ecologist role to assist with achieving points relating to land use
and ecology for sustainability assessments (e.g. BREEAM).
Designing and implementing ecological mitigation plans and site works; discussing
schemes and amendments with other professionals.
Prepare mitigation licence applications and negotiate directly with relevant statutory
bodies (eg. Natural England) to obtain necessary approvals, as licence holder or
named ecologist on the licence as required.
What we require for this position:
Full driver’s licence valid in the UK and use of a personal vehicle insured for
business use
Relevant degree, or depending on level of experience, NVQ Level 4 in ecology
related field
Previous experience of ecological field survey work
Natural England Great Crested Newt survey licence or other relevant survey licence
for lowland England (desirable but not essential)
Excellent communication skills to allow effective liaison with planners, developers,
professional advisors, contractors, landowners, the general public and others
Organisational and report writing skills
The successful candidate will be a member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and
Environmental Management (CIEEM), have a degree in Ecology or an Ecology related
field and hold a Natural England Class Licence Level 2 bat licence (for scientific or
educations purposes). A Natural England Great Crested Newt survey licence is desirable
but not essential. The role also requires excellent communication skills to allow effective
liaison with planners, developers, professional advisors, contractors, land owners and the
general public, as well as a full driver’s licence valid in the UK and use of a personal
vehicle insured for business use.
The position is based in our Chelmsford office, but there will be flexibility to work out of
our other offices as required. The working hours are 37.5 hours per week, starting and
finishing times are generally 9:00 to 17:30 in the office with an hour unpaid for lunch.
You may be required to work different hours as the job demands (for example, bat
surveys may require night working and reptile/surveys/mitigation may require early
morning or evening site visits). We offer a competitive salary with an excellent benefit
