Overview

We are seeking a Research Associate to work on modelling the impacts of climate extremes on the Amazon rainforest. This work will couple probabilistic drought forecasts with a state-of-the-art dynamic, trait-based ecosystem model that will attempt to simulate plant mortality responses to drought.

The successful applicant will apply and further develop a traits-based ecosystem model (the TFS), and also work with and organise climate model output datasets to drive the model. The position will focus in the first year on model development, in the second year on simulation of extreme events across Amazonia and in the third year on analysis and publication.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD (or be near to completion) or have equivalent research experience in a relevant subject. You must have excellent scientific programming skills and experience in python, R, Matlab, IDL or equivalent mathematical data analysis languages and familiarity with collecting or using field data. A proven ability to publish high quality scientific articles is essential.

The appointment will be at Grade 7 and the successful candidate will have the salary fixed according to experience. If no suitable applicant is forthcoming an appointment at Grade 6 (£27,328 – £32,600 p.a.) with an appropriate adjustment of duties may be considered.

This is a fixed-term post for 3 years.
