Our continued business growth means that we are offering an exciting opportunity for a technically skilled and commercially astute Principal Ecological Consultant to join our talented team of consultants at either our Cardiff or Bristol office on a full time, permanent basis.

This role is central to our plans to further develop our business in Wales and the South West and would provide an exceptional opportunity for a dynamic Principal Ecological Consultant.  You will be responsible for leading a portfolio of complex and challenging ecological projects for a wide variety of clients.  From day one, you will be helping to shape the business and to assist with the growth and development of the team.  This position provides the opportunity for an ambitious ecologist to shape their role to best suit their expertise.

Key responsibilities include

  • Managing and developing client relationships
  • Providing sound high level ecological advice to clients
  • Successfully managing projects from enquiry through to delivery of data/report
  • Producing meticulous and accurate reports for clients on time and within budget
  • Mentoring and supervising junior staff
  • Reviewing and approving reports
  • Identifying and generating new business leads.

Required skills and experience

To be successful as a Principal Ecological Consultant within Thomson Ecology you will need to demonstrate the following:

  • A commitment to promoting Thomson Ecology’s full capabilities to the external market
  • Proven experience in managing teams, client relationships, projects and budgets
  • Previous experience within a commercial ecological consultancy, working within a similar role
  • Experience of preparing work winning proposals
  • Significant experience in managing complex ecological projects, throughout the project life cycle. Candidates with experience on large infrastructure schemes, will be looked upon favourably
  • Considerable experience in writing technical proposals, reports, Environmental Statement (ES) chapters, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Habitats Regulations Assessment (HRA) as well as producing European Protected Species Licences (EPSL)
  • Very strong technical skills and considerable experience of conducting technical reviews
  • Expertise in Habitat Regulation Assessments
  • Full and working knowledge of the Ecological Impact Assessment and planning process and fully conversant with the relevant environmental legislation and guidance.

Education and Qualifications

  • An honours degree in ecology or a closely related subject
  • Full membership of CIEEM
  • Chartered Ecologist or Chartered Environmentalist status
  • A full UK driving licence and use of a car

This is a permanent position based in our modern offices in Cardiff city centre.  The successful candidate will live within commuting distance of Cardiff or be prepared to relocate.
