The Westcountry Rivers Trust is an environmental charity that works across the region to improve our rivers and watercourses for the benefit of all. We work with EU grants, Water Company funded initiatives and government funding to deliver change both in our rivers and on the land that drains them. The Trust also has a commercial arm – Westcountry Rivers Ltd; all profits from the consultancy are covenanted to the Trust to support the charity in its environmental work.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Westcountry Rivers Trust is looking for a confident and technically capable individual to join a small team of ecologists within the Trust and its commercial arm Westcountry Rivers Ltd.

This specialist role, sitting in the Trust’s Evidence and Engagement Team, will be a full time permanent position (subject to a 6 month probationary period) and based at our Head Office in Cornwall.

The role will comprise ecological survey work, reporting and project management. Whilst the role will primarily contribute to projects within the commercial sector, there will also be input required for a range of charitable, grant based and scientific projects. The Trust is involved in a huge range of work, and this provides an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, passionate and knowledgeable individual to join our friendly team.

Essential Skills

  1. Degree in an environmental/ecological subject and a minimum of 3 years’ post-graduate experience within ecological consultancy (or similar)
  2. Associate or Full Member of CIEEM
  3. Technically competent ecological surveyor – good working knowledge of Phase 1 Habitat Surveys is essential and protected species licences would be an advantage
  4. Excellent communication and report writing skills
  5. Good understanding of wildlife legislation, environmental and planning policy
  6. Experience with GIS mapping
  7. Must have a full driving licence

Desirable Skills

  1. Experience managing projects, writing proposals and undertaking client liaison
  2. Experience of freshwater ecology e.g. macroinvertebrates, non-native invasive species etc would be an advantage
  3. Additional skills that would complement the wider work of the Trust would be taken into positive consideration e.g. experience of educational work, a good working knowledge of issues such as landscape-scale conservation, ecosystem services, catchment management, river restoration etc.
