Overview

AECOM – winners of the 2019 Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management ‘Large Consultancy of the Year’ award – is seeking an experienced Ecologist to join our dynamic and forward-thinking Ecology Team based in our newly refurbished, modern office in Edinburgh.

The office is located within a 5-minute walk of the Royal Botanic Gardens and immediately beside the Water of Leith and its associated footpaths and cycleways.

Whether you prefer a balance of field work and office work, or you’re looking to largely move away from fieldwork and develop as a project manager, we can give you the platform to develop new skills and achieve your goals. This is a fantastic opportunity to further your career within an established and successful business that has welfare and wellbeing as core values.

At AECOM you can go as far as your ability and desire will take you. It’s about your interests and passions. It’s about the experiences you bring with you, and, it’s about your personal goals and aspirations. We provide you with the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse workforce of highly talented professionals on both regional and national projects that impact our world for the better – and to gain relevant experience which will be of significant benefit to you in your future career.

As a Senior Ecologist at AECOM you’ll be reliable, hard-working, organised and pro-active, in order to help you manage a busy workload. You will enjoy working with and training Graduate and Consultant Ecologists and will be confident leading a range of surveys. You’ll have specialist knowledge developed over the course of your career, and experience of a wide range of projects. For those looking for an office-based position, you’ll have project management skills and report-writing skills, with opportunities to develop these skills further under the guidance of senior managers. The ability to process data and create and manage large datasets would be an advantage. A keen eye for detail is essential.

The Ecology Team in Scotland comprises six full-time Ecologists, and we work closely with colleagues based in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, and as part of the wider UK team of more than 160 passionate and skilled ecological experts. Our Ecologists work in terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments on some of the most exciting and high-profile projects in the country. We provide clients with the full range of ecological services including specialist habitat and species surveys, impact assessment, and providing advice on biodiversity mitigation, offsetting and enhancement. AECOM is at the forefront of developing Biodiversity Net Gain and Natural Capital Accounting.

Whilst working as a small team in Scotland, AECOM Ecologists benefit from the unique benefits of our scale – not available in other consultancies – and, with access to an extensive skillset, we support and encourage professional growth and development. We operate a Freedom to Grow programme, with freedom ranging from choosing the time, place and type of work we do, through to the workstyle we choose to deploy and the way we communicate and think. The guiding principle of Freedom to Grow is that if it works for you, your team and for our client, then it works for AECOM and you have the permission to do it!
