Overview

Scottish Invasive Species Initiative (SISI) is an exciting four year HLF and SNH funded project in northern Scotland which aims to encourage communities to tackle invasive non-native species such as Japanese knotweed, giant hogweed and American mink.

To combat the impacts of invasive non-native species, the project team will work with communities to establish local management of specific priority species such as giant hogweed, Japanese knotweed and American mink. The target species will be managed in selected locations within a 29,500 km2 area of northern Scotland. The project will focus on species associated with lochs and rivers, and aims to establish a volunteer network which will help to look after local freshwater biodiversity after the project has been completed.

The project partnership comprises SNH and 10 Fisheries Trusts/District Salmon Fisheries Boards and Aberdeen University. The Project Team will consist of 2 posts employed by SNH: a Project Manager and a Project Administrator who will work together with local SISI staff (referred to as SISI Project Officers) to deliver the project on behalf of the project partnership. A full time Volunteer and Communications Officer will also be recruited to support the SISI Project Officers with volunteer recruitment, training, management and retention. This post will work closely with the Project Manager and local delivery organisations for implementation of the Volunteer Management and Retention Plan and the Communication Plan.

The Project Manager will be based in an SNH office and will have overall responsibility for the delivery of the SISI project, including reporting to the project steering group, liaising with funders, matrix managing the SISI Project Officers, and line managing the Administrator.
