Principal Ecologist

The company is seeking to recruit a Principal Ecologist to lead, manage and develop its Ecology Team to meet the strong growing demand for the company’s ecological services. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and guiding the Ecology Team’s outputs in the renewable energy, transport, water and infrastructure sectors, in addition to a range of private sector developments. A broad range of experience on large-scale projects in these areas is essential.

 

The role offers an exciting opportunity for an ambitious professional to live in and work from Galway, Ireland’s third largest city, on projects all across the country, for a fast-growing, successful and busy consultancy. Within the role, the right candidate will have an opportunity to advance their career as far as their ambitions permit.

 

The key responsibilities of the role will be to:

·         Direct and oversee projects being undertaken by the company’s Ecology team on a day-to-day basis;

·         Build strong relationships with customers and proactively manage those client relationships to deliver the level of customer service expected;

·         Review ecological reports prepared by other Ecology team members and write report inputs commensurate with the successful candidate’s level of expertise;

·         Undertake specialist fieldwork commensurate with the successful candidate’s level of expertise, as required in the fulfilment of the Principal Ecologist’s role;

·         Instruct, guide and mentor a team of in-house ecologists to deliver project requirements;

·         Identify Ecology project and client requirements and tailor the fit-for-purpose Scope of Work required to successfully complete the project;

·         Prioritise the Ecology team’s workload while balancing client expectations, available staff resources and project deadlines;

·         Manage the Ecology team’s pipeline of new work, by coordinating the preparation and issuing fee proposals and tenders, and identify new opportunity areas for future growth;

·         Support Ecology team members in the fulfilment of their assigned duties and advancement of their careers through ongoing mentoring;

·         Plan and allocate staff resources to projects to manage current and forecasted workload;

 

The key requirements of the post will be:

·         A third-level qualification in ecology, environmental or natural sciences, or other related fields that give the candidate the necessary skills to fulfil the role;

·         A minimum of 10 years’ post-graduate experience in fulfilling similar functions or in a similar consultancy role;

·         A specialism in one field of ecology with a broader working knowledge of other inter-related fields;

·         An excellent understanding of the EU Habitats and EIA Directives in so far as they relate to project-based ecological impact assessments being undertaken by an ecological consultancy;

·         A proven track record at building long-term professional relationships with clients and key stakeholders;

·         Demonstrable ability to manage the busy and varied ecological workload of a team of ecologists;

·         Full CIEEM membership;

·         A Full driving licence;

 

Successful candidates will be offered an attractive salary package, including bonus/profit-share, commensurate with their experience. Candidates relocating from outside Ireland will be offered an additional relocation allowance.
