As a water company, we understand that our core activities have a direct impact on nature, and we need to manage them carefully to ensure our impact is positive. This is why we are looking for a Hydroecologist/Freshwater Ecologist to join our team on a permanent basis and help us to continue the great work we are doing.

Working within our Sustainable Abstraction team, you will provide support and advice relating to freshwater ecology and hydroecology. You will assist with our environmental investigations, impact assessments and investment options appraisals with the objective of informing our investment plans.

The programme of works covers the whole of the Severn Trent region and is delivered using Severn Trent Water’s in-house technical experts and specialist consultants. You will have the opportunity to work with both internal and external stakeholders to ensure we complete our projects.

What else will you be doing?
  • Coordinate and provide technical input to help scope our environmental monitoring programme, trials and desired outcomes.
  • Provide technical expertise to assist in interpreting our monitoring data, trial outputs and environmental impacts.
  • Source and quality check the ecological and flow data used to inform our environmental impact trials and investigations.
  • Assist the senior hydroecologists in delivering the hydrological technical improvements / projects needed to achieve desired business performance or environmental best practice, and project manage supporting technical consultants as necessary.
  • Work with a team to deliver the freshwater ecology and hydroecological technical work streams of defined business improvements plans.
What are we looking for?

In order to succeed in this role, it is expected that you will have an understanding of freshwater biology and ecology and the relationship between ecology and flow/water quality.

It is key that you understand the environmental pressures impacting on streams and rivers , in particular abstraction.

You will have well-developed Project management skills, an analytical way of thinking and knowledge of risk management. Alongside this, you will be able to communicate simple or complex messages to promote practical solutions.

Although not essential, it would be great if you had an understanding of water resources management.

Qualifications
  • A degree in freshwater ecology, environmental science, or other equivalent status.
  • Full driving licence
