Mott MacDonald has a CIEEM award-winning team of over 100 ecologists in the UK. We work on a huge range of projects in both the domestic and international markets and across multiple sectors. We pride ourselves in delivering projects that exceed our clients’ expectations and maximise opportunities for biodiversity. Two exciting opportunities have arisen to join our team and support the delivery of a range of ecological services from our Cambridge and Leeds offices.

In collaboration with ecology colleagues and other environmental disciplines you will be responsible for supporting a variety of multi-disciplinary projects, with a key focus on leading on a range of ecological surveys, managing field data and the delivery of technical reports. The management and delivery of small-scale projects, with support from senior staff, will also be required.

These roles will suit dynamic, proactive individuals who want to work in a growth area of our business and help support the delivery of ecological services in a fast moving, client focussed commercial environment.

Candidate Specification

  • Recognised 2:1 degree in a biological, science or related degree
  • At least an full member of Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM)
  • Ability to competently undertake and lead Extended phase 1 surveys and writing of Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (PEA) reports to standard CIEEM guidelines
  • Ability to carry out protected species surveys
  • Strong report writing skills, attention to detail and ability to write concise reports
  • Relevant consultancy experience
  • Knowledge of wildlife legislation, including planning process and EIA assessments
  • Personal Natural England conservation licence for at least one protected species
  • Experience of leading survey teams in the field
  • Track record of mentoring and developing junior staff members
  • Ability to work independently, take the initiative, make robust, defensible decisions and work to tight deadlines to meet client needs
  • Full, clean driving licence and willingness to travel and undertake fieldwork in the UK and internationally
  • Flexible approach to working day to fit in with the patterns as required of an Ecologist

Job Profile

Our environment team provides a wide range of specialist environmental support to internal and external clients and has an increasing workload across infrastructure and development sectors. Due to continuous growth, we now have a need for an experienced Ecologist to join our expanding team in Leeds city centre.

Based in Leeds you will be working across the region and will be supporting not just delivery of nationally important schemes such as HS2, but also smaller schemes that are important to local communities like new schools, better sports clubs, and housing projects. Our Leeds team are engaged in provision of support to both Public and Private sector clients and we are able to offer a genuine variety of work, including opportunities in the road and water sectors, with local authorities, energy sector and developers.
