JOB PURPOSE:

To assist with practical delivery of winter contracting work, primarily scrub cutting and small tree felling on nature conservation sites. Other types of countryside/ecological contracting and landscape works may be undertaken during the employment period, in which training can be given where necessary.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES:

To carry out day to day physical site work associated with habitat management and countryside/ecological contracting, including manual handling. To work safely and diligently under the guidance of the Directors and Senior Ecological Contracting Operative to deliver work to high standards, including those associated with protected sites and health and safety. To contribute to proper use and maintenance of shared tools and equipment. To maintain professional conduct as a representative of Morton : Pattison when dealing with clients, suppliers, contractors, sub-contractors and members of the public.

PERSON SPECIFICATION:

Education / Qualifications

Essential

  • Educated to GCSE standard including maths and English
  • NPTC chainsaw certificates CS30 & CS31, or equivalent
  • Full UK driving licence

Desirable

  • Brush cutter certificate
  • NPTC pesticide application certificates PA1 & PA6
  • Relevant first aid qualification
  • Qualification, or working toward a qualification, in a land-based industry

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working outside in a land-based practical role
  • Must be an experienced and a competent user of chainsaws
  • Experience of working within a team

Desirable

  • Experience of using a variety of tools and types of machinery
  • Experience of and/or qualifications in plant machinery use
  • Experience of working on ecologically sensitive sites

Knowledge / skills

Essential

  • Practical conservation / forestry / horticulture / landscape skills
  • Basic species identification skills
  • Good team working skills
  • Ability to work independently, prioritising work to operate efficiently and safely
  • Good verbal communication skills

Desirable

  • Basic ecological knowledge

  • Physically fit and able to work outside, in adverse weather conditions at times

LOCATION: Working from the Winchester office. Work sites will predominantly be in Hampshire and Surrey.

DURATION: Fixed term contract from beginning September 2019 until Friday 28th February 2020, with possibility of extension.

WORKING HOURS: On site 8am – 4pm Monday to Friday. There may occasionally be opportunity for weekend overtime paid on a ‘time-and-a-half’ basis. Part-time will be considered.

REMUNERATION: £16,500 – £18,500 (depending on experience) per annum, calculated pro-rata.

HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT: 28 days pro-rata inclusive of bank and statutory holidays
