Overview

Wild Ken Hill is a UK conservation and farming project located in West Norfolk, that uses a three-prong approach of rewilding, regenerative agriculture and traditional conservation across a 4,000-acre area.

We are seeking to employ a new Conservation Leader & Ecologist. This is an opportunity to join one of the UK’s leading conservation and farming projects, hold a diverse set of responsibilities, lead and be responsible for developing interaction with visitors and guests, and spend time in the field.

This individual would focus on taking groups of visitors on guided tours, providing information on the ecology of the site and the overall project. Around this work, this individual would manage a small herd of wild cattle and other graziers (initially less than 30 head) within the rewilding area, tracking grazing behaviours and monitoring vegetation regeneration. This individual would also design and conduct ecological surveys aimed to monitor the progress of our rewilding and regenerative agriculture projects, helping managers of the project to understand the site better and adjust practices accordingly.

As biodiversity and the size of the grazing herds grow over time, it is likely that this role will be supported by junior team members and will take on more management responsibility, with opportunities for growth.

Candidates would ideally have the following skills:

  • Strong people and communication skills
  • Excellent teamwork skills and also capable of taking leadership among groups
  • Good time management skills and an ability to quickly switch between different tasks
  • Good IT skills, with the ability to conduct survey analysis and create reports
  • Ability to self-motivate, structure their own agenda, and work diligently
  • An understand of grazing ecology / conservation grazing and a willingness to work with small numbers of animals in a natural grazing system (note that Wild Ken Hill would likely pay for the individual to attend short training courses on natural grazing)
  • Ability to design and conduct ecological surveys pertinent to the development of both rewilding and regenerative agriculture ecosystems, as well as regular surveys (e.g., BBS)

Candidates would ideally have the following experience:

  • An Undergraduate or Master’s degree in Ecology, Zoology or similar
  • Eight or more years’ experience in an ecology-focused role (conservation project ecologist, consultant, or similar)
  • Familiarity with the principles of rewilding and regenerative agriculture

Employment details:

  • Full-time
  • Salary of £30-40k per annum
  • Start in September 2020
  • Candidates would be required to live on site: it is likely a rental property would be made available by Wild Ken Hill, or assistance would be provided in finding a nearby property
