Overview

We have a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Biodiversity Officer to join our multi-disciplinary team helping to manage the ecological networks within the borough. Working alongside other ecologists, arboriculturalists and landscape architects, you will have a central role in conserving the natural environment and shaping the future development of a borough that is proud to go beyond.

Basingstoke is a dynamic and expanding town surrounded by beautiful Hampshire villages and the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The quality and diversity of our natural environment is crucial to the quality of life of our residents and visitors and we place great value on this resource. The borough includes the River Test, River Loddon, numerous Sites of Special Scientific Interest, Local Nature Reserves and Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation, all making it a great place to live and work.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council is committed to conserving this important resource through its statutory functions, such as planning, and by working in partnership with others. You’ll advise and negotiate on all aspects of biodiversity in relation to our development management and planning enforcement functions. You’ll also help in delivering aspects of the council’s natural environment strategy (Living Landscapes) and our Green Infrastructure Strategy.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual who is passionate about the natural environment to help deliver a forward thinking biodiversity service. With a degree or equivalent in ecology, or a closely related subject, you’ll have experience of assessing the ecological impact of development proposals and skills in habitat and species surveying.

In return, we know that every single employee at Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council makes a difference and we are proud to say we go beyond as an employer, winning Employer of the Year in the Inspire15 Business Awards. You will have the opportunity to share and develop your skills as a biodiversity officer and we will welcome you into a friendly and highly effective team of professionals with big ambitions for the borough and its environment.
