Overview

Supporting the business and our divisional offices, our Head Office functions cover all departments from our Executive Board through to our support functions such as Group Design & Technical, HR, Health & Safety, IT, Sales & Marketing, Commercial, Procurement, Group Finance, Corporate Affairs, as well as Legal and Company Secretariat. We also have a specialised function – Barratt Partnerships.

While the work varies from team to team, our key requirements don’t. You must be well organised, extremely helpful and resourceful, and able to use your initiative. You’ll understand that what you do is important, and impacts on your team, the department, and the wider business.
Summary of Role

Reporting to the Group Design and Technical Director, this role will support Barratt Developments PLC in developing and delivering consistent biodiversity and environmental sustainability details/information for all sites by assisting/working with the operating Divisions. Develop Group initiatives to ensure this process is capable of capturing all relative information required for the Sustainability Report. At times work closely and support the Head of Corporate Sustainability.

 

What Will I Be Responsible For?

Main Duties:

To ensure that the key biodiversity elements of the Barratt Developments PLC ‘Complete Landscape Reference Pack’ is up to date with best-practice and implemented across all of the Company’s operations and regularly updated and reviewed.
To work with Barratt Developments PLC specialist staff including the Head of Corporate Sustainability to develop and implement a programme of work to engage the Company’s Divisions, customers (and potentially suppliers) with biodiversity delivery as a cornerstone of sustainability in construction.
Continually assess our ecologist consultancy fees throughout the Group and develop standard templates to cover all sites and approvals to significantly reduce costs in this regard.
To assess the potential for implementing biodiversity and environmental sustainability measures across Barratt Developments PLC operations, with a view to understanding, prioritising and ensure overall net-positive outcomes. Work will be subject findings of our net positive work already underway with CIRIA.
To work with Barratt Developments PLC sustainability personnel to integrate biodiversity with other sustainability parameters and include in sustainability reporting (external and internal).
To work with Barratt Developments PLC specialist staff to prepare biodiversity plans for prioritised sites that ensure net-positive outcomes.
To work with Barratt Developments PLC staff to promote and raise the profile of benefits of biodiversity enhancement among local authority planners, the local community, and opportunities for education, access, recreation.
To identify case studies of innovative approaches to biodiversity enhancement in planning, design, solution testing, etc., and delivery of other public benefits (e.g. Ecosystem Services) from Barratt Developments PLC operations to be disseminated and or demonstrated to relevant stakeholder audience. e.g land and planning teams within divisions, and externally to local authorities or other development partners
To develop a programme to engage across the Barratt Developments PLC Divisions and relevant Group Functions, to raise awareness of the value and public benefits arising from a biodiversity approach, including links with natural capital accounting approaches
To explore opportunities for longer-term arrangements for biodiversity.
To support divisional and PLC in raising the profile externally of Barratt’s leading approach to achieving development and biodiversity gains in a commercially effective manner
Other Duties:

To manage and promote a programme of work in line with the requirements of the job role.
To present reports, update progress and at times conduct PowerPoint presentations to varying sections of the Barratt business.
To liaise regularly with the Barratt operating Divisions and the RSPB assisting with its Partnership arrangement.
Assist with Barratt communications personnel to promote Biodiversity; may include media releases.
To work with Divisions to develop and maintain records and report actual and planned BAP contribution.
To develop opportunities for support from volunteers and internships.
To perform any necessary administration in keeping with the role and in liaison with relevant administrative staff in Barratt Developments PLC
Personal Characteristics/Qualifications/Experience

Essential

Degree (or equivalent) in relevant subject eg Ecology/Environmental Sciences
Considerable experience in utility biodiversity related to the built environmental and urbanised landscapes
Knowledge of Urban and peri-urban ecology
Successful working with a range of planning and site management organisations
Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
Influencing, advocacy and diplomacy skills
Computer skills
Ability to complete projects within budget and timescales
Ability to manage complex work programmes to tight deadlines
Enthusiastic, self-starter, confident working with and motivating at senior level of management
Desirable

Professional membership of IEMA or IEEM
Good understanding of biodiversity policy and regulation
Practical experience of realising opportunities in the context of on-site constraints
Good Project Management skills
Computer Mapping skills (GIS, CAD etc)
Good knowledge of workings of UK planning systems and principles of landscape design
