PBA Applied Ecology was established in 2010 and has grown to become one of the UK’s most respected specialist ecology practices. We provide clients with efficient, well-targeted, and technically competent services that benefit sustainable development projects and the conservation management of natural habitats, native species and ecosystem function.

Working throughout the UK from our base in the Yorkshire Dales we offer a wide range of services with particular strengths across terrestrial and aquatic ecology. We are especially experienced in working on challenging infrastructure projects that are located at protected or sensitive locations. Drawing upon a wealth of experience, we take an evidence-based approach and provide practical and sustainable solutions for our clients.

The traditional market town of Settle is just a mile away, and this is also a great area for a range of sports, outdoor pursuits and classic karst landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales.

The Role

An exciting opportunity for an Assistant Ecologist at the company’s modern base in Giggleswick, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Carrying out ecological surveys and providing ecological and environmental support to a wide range of development projects throughout the UK, PBA has a broad range of varied and interesting projects, each requiring bespoke solutions.

This is a permanent full-time position (6 months probation), with the opportunity for further progression within the business. Specific duties to include

  • Supporting Senior & Project Ecologists in the delivery of a wide range of projects.
  • Assisting with planning and resourcing of ecological surveys and species identification.
  • Contributing to providing sound ecological advice to clients within your areas of expertise.
  • Assisting with producing meticulous and accurate reports for clients on time and within budget
  • Assisting with data requests, and reporting on data searches
  • Assisting with data entry and digital mapping
  • Supporting senior staff in the management and development of client relationships.
  • Assisting with business development, including generating repeat business.

Requirements

  • Achieved or expected to achieve a BSc 2(i) in a natural sciences subject or a postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline.
  • Able to demonstrate keen interest in natural science, ecology and the natural environment
  • Engaged, enthusiastic and willing to learn.
  • Adaptable and has a “can do” attitude.
  • Good verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent written English and good report writing ability.
  • Exceptional planning and organisational skills for your own time and project work.
  • Capable of working under pressure with the ability to meet critical deadlines.
  • Willing to follow instruction, especially in respect of personal safety.
  • Proficiency in standard IT and communication applications is essential, and capabilities in statistical and mapping software are desirable.
  • Energetic, well-motivated, with a good level of physical ability to undertake strenuous survey work in remote locations and the ability to swim confidently in open water.
  • Full driving licence.

Starting Salary range: £17,700-21,400
