Overview

Amec Foster Wheeler is working on a number of exciting major infrastructure projects in the UK and is seeking to recruit talented and ambitious Ornithologists (Assistant Consultant / Consultant) to join our Southern Ecology Team (London or Reading offices) in order to support the delivery of these and other projects. Our long established but still growing team delivers high quality ecological services on complex projects in a variety of sectors including transport, renewables, nuclear, other power, waste, minerals and property.
Due to our expanding project portfolio Amec Foster Wheeler require an Ornithologists to join our Southern Ecology team, working all over the UK but mainly in Southern England. You will be working within an established team of Ornithologists and Ecologists and would be expected to provide assistance and support for our on-going workload in a broad variety of locations and projects ranging from estuarine SPA wader monitoring in lowland England to breeding bird surveys (CBC and species specific) across some large scale, varied and high quality greenfield sites.

Key Responsibilities
The main focus of the role will be assisting the team with initial visits to sites for new projects and to undertake survey work on these and existing projects. There will be the opportunity to assist in the management of site fieldwork schedules, in the production of baseline bird reports and be involved in data entry and GIS. There will also be the opportunity to assist the wider ecology team in the south with other ecological surveys and any wider ecological experience in protected species surveys would be highly desirable. Data gathering, surveying and the interpretation of results will be key to the role.

Skills / Qualifications
Qualified to degree level (or equivalent) in a relevant ecological/ environmental subject, you will be a competent and appropriately experienced ornithologist. You will have good bird identification skills, be familiar with a range of species specific and generic bird survey techniques and have a sound knowledge base of bird ecology. Typically, we would expect around two years’ experience in ornithological survey and appraisal or field based research to have developed the skills required for the post. Candidates with a higher level of experience and ability will be considered for the higher grade Ornithologist role. Wider ecological survey skills would be highly desirable although not essential.

 

Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) would be beneficial. A valid UK driving licence is essential for this role as is the flexibility to work unsocial hours and to work away on site when required.
