The team

The ADAS plant pathology team provide research and consultancy expertise to improve management of arable and horticultural diseases. The team conducts innovative research and develops sustainable and practical strategies for the management of foliar, stem and root diseases. Research areas include integrated management of plant pathogens, fungicide resistance management, crop genetic improvement, development and optimisation of biological and cultural control methods, fungicide and biopesticide efficacy trials, disease monitoring, reporting and forecasting.

The role

Both roles will be office based and require some outdoor work. This will include management of field and glasshouse/polytunnel/laboratory experiments at ADAS sites as well as field experiments at commercial sites nationally particularly Eastern England, North Yorkshire, Devon and Herefordshire.  Travel and short stays away from home will be required and you will work closely with the technical teams at Boxworth and other ADAS sites. After appropriate training you will be responsible for writing and agreeing protocols, monitoring project progress, analysis and interpretation of results into practical messages. You will communicate those messages through reports, press articles, on conference platforms, in client meetings, through ADAS initiatives and industry events, and writing peer-review papers.

The outcome of your work will be real improvements to the efficiency and sustainability of crop production.

What you will be doing

Manage projects throughout the complete project cycle (including preparing bids, planning team requirements/resources and ensuring timely and profitable delivery).
Identifying further work in these areas and developing your own projects.
Deliver practical research and consultancy on the sustainable control of the major diseases affecting arable or horticultural crops.
Developing sound and effective working relationships with project funders, collaborators and colleagues in order to grow the business.
Raise the profile of the crop protection sector by presenting at science and industry conferences and by writing peer reviewed papers.

Successful candidates will

Apply knowledge of biology underpinned by scientific understanding to manage research experiments that produce robust and credible scientific data and information.
Demonstrate knowledge of crop production and arable disease management in order to meet client needs.
Ensure that scientific research projects are planned, managed and lead to achieve stated objectives within the agreed timescale and budget.
Demonstrate strong ability for analysing and organising large, complex datasets.
Write client reports, scientific papers and bids that are clear, logical and persuasive, meeting the needs of clients and achieving the objective of the communication for ADAS.
Communicate effectively with a range of audiences to transfer the knowledge gained.  This will include speaking at grower meetings, presenting to conferences of scientists and/or practitioners and writing technical articles and leaflets.
Recognise and understand the team’s aims and objectives and participate fully in achieving these with team members by adapting your own input to suit the needs of the team.
