The Ecology team within Atkins’ Water and Environment business are committed to providing expert and pragmatic specialist ecological advice in connection with infrastructure, development and other projects.  Our work includes protected species assessments, habitat management plans, mitigation, site restoration and rehabilitation measures, specialist services for planning applications, and Environmental Impact Assessments. We have a reputation for delivering technically demanding projects and innovative approaches, and work for a range of government departments, multi-national industrial clients, funding agencies and lenders, property developers, and regulatory authorities.
 
Atkins currently has over 50 Ecologists based in offices around the UK. We operate across the UK and internationally, working closely with colleagues from other environmental and engineering disciplines. For this position, the majority of work is likely to be regional, but there will be technical collaboration and networking with the ecologists working within the company around the UK.
 
The Role
 
The successful candidate will be expected to:
  • Manage and lead the ecological input to a varied range of projects across different sectors;
  • Lead, plan and co-ordinate field surveys and plan and co-ordinate ecological mitigation works;
  • Undertake reporting and ecological impact assessments;
  • Prepare bids and help win work for the team; and
  • Work effectively as part of a team with ecologists and other professionals (environmental scientists, engineers, planners) throughout Atkins to provide a consistent and integrated service to clients;

Requirements
Qualifications
  • Must have a degree in a relevant discipline and preferably an MSc.
  • Full Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).
  • Chartered Ecologist or Chartered Environmentalist status would be an advantage.
Essential Criteria
 
The following criteria are essential for the role:
  • Experience as a Senior Ecologist in a similar (i.e. consultancy) role;
  • Experience of undertaking Preliminary Ecological Appraisal, Ecological Impact Assessment, protected species development licence applications and implementation of mitigation on site;
  • Botanical survey skills and and/or a survey licence for one or more protected species;
  • Experience of project co-ordination, production of bids and management of budgets; and
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and proficiency in standard IT applications (including Word, Excel and Outlook).
Note: it is a requirement to be available to work in the evenings and early mornings and it may be necessary to be away from home for one or more nights per week, regularly during the survey season.
